Kansas ASTA (KASTA) is an affiliate organization of the Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) and a state chapter of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). Founded in 1946, ASTA is a membership organization for string and orchestra teachers and players, helping them to develop and refine their careers. ASTA’s members range from budding student teachers to artist-status performers. KASTA provides its mission through providing professional development, career building, and support to Kansas’s string teacher community.

KASTA Events

Solo Competition: Held annually in conjunction with the KMEA Inservice Workshop and open to students from grade school through college. Winners of each of the three categories receive prize money and the grand prize winner performs at the KASTA luncheon.

KASTA Luncheon: Teachers attending the KMEA Inservice workshop convene to celebrate yearly KASTA award winners and enjoy the grand prize winner’s solo competition piece.

Kansas Intercollegiate Orchestra: Collegiate orchestra students from around the state participate bi-annually in an orchestra directed by a nationally recognized clinician and perform at the KMEA Inservice workshop.

Middle Level Honor Orchestra: An annual event where middle school students from around the state are nominated by their directors to participate in this one-day festival with a guest clinician.

Summer Teachers Conference/Workshop: Teachers from around the state gather for two days to learn from a nationally known clinician, participate in reading sessions, and collaborate over best practices.

Summer Middle School Student Orchestra: Middle school students participate in a one-day orchestra experience as part of the Summer Teacher workshop.

Private Studio Teacher Summit: Private Studio teachers come together for part of a day to share ideas and strengthen the community of string teachers.
