Kansas Contest Guidelines
1. The
competition will be comprised of two divisions: JUNIOR and SENIOR.
2. Applicants should send a CD of
the required repertoire (see below) to me no later than November 1, 2011. CDs
should be accompanied by proof of the applicant's age (birth certificate,
passport, license, state ID, etc), proof of ASTA membership (all applicants
should be a member of ASTA, or they should be a student of a current
professional ASTA member), $20 fee (checks made payable to KASTA), and the
accompanying entry form.
3.
One JUNIOR
division winner and one SENIOR division winner will be selected from the CDs for
recognition and a $350 and $500, respectively, award. These two winners will
perform at the Kansas Music Educator’s Association In-Service Workshop in late
February, 2012, at which time they will receive their checks (winners that
cannot perform at the workshop will be mailed their checks by this time).
Results of the
competition will be made via email by the end of November, 2011.
4. Each piece should be recorded
WITHOUT editing during the piece. Recordings should be clearly labeled with the
NAME, AGE, ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER, INSTRUMENT, TEACHER'S NAME, and WORKS
PERFORMED. Recordings will not be returned.
JUNIOR DIVISION CD REPERTOIRE:
VIOLIN:
-any movement from the Bach 6 Solo
Sonatas and Partitas
-any 2 contrasting pieces of
contestant's choice
VIOLA:
-any movement from the Bach Cello
Suites
-any 2 contrasting pieces of the
contestant's choice
CELLO:
-any movement from the Bach Cello
Suites
-any 2 contrasting pieces of the
contestant's choice
BASS:
-any movement from the Bach Cello Suites
-any 2 contrasting pieces of the
contestant's choice
SENIOR DIVISION CD REPERTOIRE:
VIOLIN:
-any 2 contrasting movements from the
Bach 6 Solo Sonatas and Partitas
-any movement from a standard violin
concerto
VIOLA:
-any 2 contrasting movements from the
Bach Cello Suites
-any movement from a standard viola
concerto
CELLO:
-any movement from the Bach Cello
Suites
-any 2 contrasting pieces of the
contestant's choice
BASS:
-any movement from the Bach Cello Suites
-any 2 contrasting pieces of the
contestant's choice
NOTES:
-Piano accompaniment is not required
for CD submission but is encouraged.
-Cuts in orchestral tutti sections is
permissible by piano accompanists.
-Decisions of the listening committee
are final.
-Concerto movements that feature
cadenzas should be performed on the CD recordings with the cadenzas un-omitted.
-Contestants are required to make
arrangements for their accompanists at the earliest possible date to perform at
the KMEA In-Service Workshop in February, 2012.
